You'll be travelling to the otherworldly Landmannalaugar region on this excursion to see what the remote Highlands have to offer. After being picked up in Reykjavík in the morning, you'll be driven out of the city and into the wild Icelandic countryside.
On the way to Landmannalaugar, you will be driven through the amazing Þjórsárdalur Valley, which is covered in white pumice from nearby volcanoes. You'll stop at the lovely waterfall Þjófafoss with the mountain Búrfell in the background and at the explosion crater Ljótipollur.
Landmannalaugar and the surrounding nature reserve is one of the most beautiful geological landscapes of Iceland. The view resembles a painting or a scene in a fairytale, with beautifully coloured bright green, yellow and pink rhyolitic mountains and patches of shiny black obsidian. Landmannalaugar is a geothermally active area with a natural pool, in which many travellers bathe, so remember your swimsuit!
Before you get back to the city, you'll visit Háifoss waterfall which is the one of the highest in Iceland, and Hjálparfoss, a beautiful waterfall, split into two separate falls that join at the base and into a small lagoon.
The name of the waterfall, Hjálparfoss, means "The helping waterfall". The name originates from the old days when people, riding horses over the harsh landscape of the Sprengisandur Highlands, came to this green and relatively lush area, which served as a great help for their horses to graze and recover from the difficult ride.
